Cookie Management

Cookies are small text files sent to the user’s terminal equipment (usually to the user’s browser) by visited websites; they are stored in the user’s terminal equipment to be re-transmitted to the websites on the user’s subsequent visits to those websites. When browsing a website, a user may receive cookies from other websites or web servers, the so-called “third party” cookies. This happens because the visited website may contain items such as images, maps, sound files, and links to individual web pages on different domains that are located on servers other than the one where the page being visited is stored.

Cookies are present as a rule in substantial numbers in each user’s browser and sometimes they remain stored for long. They are used for several purposes ranging from IT authentication to monitoring browsing sessions up to storing specific information on user configurations in accessing a given server, and so on.

There are two main categories: “technical” cookies and “profiling” cookies.

1.Technical Cookies

Technical cookies are those used exclusively to “carry out the transmission of a communication on an electronic communications network, or insofar as this is strictly necessary to the provider of an information society service that the contracting party or user has explicitly requested to provide the said service.” (see Article 122.1 of the Italian Privacy Code).

They are not used for further purposes and are usually installed directly by the data controller or the website manager. They can be further grouped into:

  • browsing or session cookies, which allow users to navigate and use a website (e.g. to purchase items online or authenticate themselves to access certain sections);
  • functional cookies, which allow users to navigate according to certain pre-determined criteria (such as a selected language) so as to improve the quality of service provided;
  • analytics cookies allow us to measure the web application’s performance to improve users’ browsing experience. To be considered equivalent to technical cookies, all information collected by these cookies must be aggregated and anonymized.

Users’ prior consent is not necessary to install these cookies, but information as stated in article 13 of GDPR has to be provided.

2.Profiling Cookies

Used to lead back to specific, identified, or identifiable subjects, specific actions or behavioral patterns recurring in the use of the features offered to group the user within user profile clusters to modulate the provision of the service far beyond what is strictly necessary to provide the service, as well as send targeted advertising messages.

The use of these cookies requires the explicit consent of the user.

The visitor may in any case decide whether to accept cookies by reviewing the settings of his browser. Following are instructions on how to disable cookies on the most used browsers, made available by their supporting services:
