Italy has achieved significant recognition within the framework of the European program for creating the first AI Factories and strategic infrastructures for artificial intelligence promoted by the European Commission.

Among the selected projects, IT4LIA will provide a world-class AI infrastructure and a cohesive ecosystem to bring together researchers, developers, startups and small media enterprises (SMEs) to bridge the gap between AI providers and potential users, such as public administration, students, academia, SMEs and industries. The Tecnopolo of Bologna, already recognized as a central hub for supercomputing, big data, and quantum computing, will host the AI Factory infrastructure.

The project is the result of collaboration between prominent Italian institutions, including CINECA, which will coordinate the project, INFN, the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK), the ItaliaMeteo Agency, the National Research Center in HPC, Big Data, and Quantum Computing (ICSC), and other institutional and regional partners.

The Role of CINECA and the Tecnopolo

CINECA will be responsible for implementing and managing an advanced supercomputer optimized for artificial intelligence applications, further consolidating Tecnopolo as a European hub for technological innovation. This cutting-edge centre is at the heart of strategic technological initiatives in Emilia-Romagna, strengthening the national AI ecosystem. The infrastructure will serve as a key resource to foster collaboration between research and industry, accelerating the development of innovative solutions in agri-food, cybersecurity, and climate change mitigation.
This project represents a crucial step in bolstering Italian and European leadership in technological innovation, delivering tangible benefits for research and the country’s economic fabric.
