Finite differences provide the most accurate solution of the wave equation but are also extremely computing intensive. The use of the most advanced hardware is therefore mandatory in order to obtain reasonable computing time. Nonetheless, this is not enough: software must guarantee the maximum efficiency in the usage of such resources. In this paper we discuss the performance improvement achieved through an efficient implementation of finite differences on a multicore CPU.
