Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) account for one-third of birth defects. Interventions and resources are needed to improve survival and quality of life. A proposed application experiment aims to support surgical planning using advanced numerical means.
Start date: 01/06/2021
Duration in months: 18
Problem Description
SMEs IST and RBF are collaborating to expand their business in the field of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), focusing on computational simulation of the Modified Blalock Taussig Shunt (mBTS) to improve survival and quality of life.
Goals
New services
Challenges
The concept of shunting is simple but associated with significant morbidity and mortality, with over-shunting and shunt thrombosis being the most lethal complications. Simulation could support medical decisions but requires substantial computing power.
Innovation results
Copernicus is an affordable decision support web application that uses a medical digital twin (MDT) to optimize mBTS medical intervention. It generates MDTs using a Reduced Order Model, reducing computational time, ultimately aiding in decision-making for mBTS preparations.
Business impact
IST plans to increase annual turnover by €450000 after software certification, while clinicians aim to reduce hospitalization by 5-6 days. FTGM expects savings of over €100000 per year, RBF, RINA-C and CINECA expect €250000, €200000, and €30000 respectively in increased turnover by 2026.
