HSL is a hi-tech centre for the development of new products and a market leader in both Additive Manufacturing and rapid production of prototypes. The project aims to create an affordable shape optimizer CAE tool that uses CFD simulations and helps designer in exploiting additive manufacturing potentialities.

Start date: 01/07/2013

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

Current design tools have been developed for traditional manufacturing procedures and are not flexible enough. This limits the potential of 3D printing. The objective of this project is the development of an affordable shape-optimisation service that uses CFD simulation to suggest the best design.

Goals

New services

Challenges

The main points that make shape-optimization long and expensive are the mesh generation and CFD simulation at each optimization stage. To overcome these points a mesh morphing procedure has to be implemented and it has to be implemented a workflow that exploit cloud HPC system for CFD.

Innovation results

Numerical grid parameterisation using a mesh morpher avoids the time-consuming task of mesh generation Access to CFD simulation through the Fortissimo HPC Cloud allows a further speed-up in calculation times. Using a cloud interface helps a more effective product development.

Business impact

The new service reduces product development costs by 70%, boosting HSL's annual revenue by 16%. UTV gains know-how to attract more industrial research projects, resulting in 40-70k€ in revenue in 5 years. Cineca has a success story that can attract more projects, resulting in a 5% revenue increase.
