IES, a Scottish SMEs, develops the world’s leading integrated building-performance modelling software system. With expertise in advanced design tools, IES provides support for large and challenging buildings. The IES Virtual Environment (VE) is a suite of tools for building performance modelling, providing high-quality information. This tool is used at any stage of a city’s life and relies on HPC cloud-based simulation for large data.

Start date: 01/07/2013

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

IES Provides cutting-edge support for the design, construction, and operation of some of the world's largest and most challenging buildings, thereby creating more efficient and sustainable communities. To this end, it has developed a planning tool for cities that will enable stakeholders to assess a city's energy efficiency, quality of life, etc.

Goals

New services

Challenges

The challenge faced with the use-case is to manage the huge amount of data generated by buildings through cloud-based HPC simulation.

Innovation results

IES has developed a tool using its VE to efficiently handle large simulations using Cloud-based HPC, reducing runtime and increasing the number of buildings in a simulation, a significant case study for IES, despite traditional simulating individual buildings.

Business impact

In this case study, model simulations ranging from the small to the very large were tested. Typical speedups (comparing the workstation to the HPC system) were between 5 and 10 times and the cost was half.
