Growing legislation landscape requests extensive cybersecurity tests. To this end expensive device, which hugely limits the agility and scalability of addressing their bugs, are needed. A future-proof solution is virtualizing IoT devices/firmware to obtain a running/operating “Digital Twin” that offers an accurate representation of the IoT device/firmware under test. The challenge to ensure the cybersecurity of IoT devices is related to the difficulty to know what is running inside an IoT device/firmware and whether the (vulnerable) components are being reused, since most IoT firmware is supplied in binary packages and vendors hardly ever publish the composition of the software also known as the Software Bill of Materials (SBoM).
