Power plant maintenance planning is crucial for energy producers, especially in the renewable energy transition. Artelys is developing Monte-Carlo simulations to automate the analysis process, optimizing maintenance plans while accounting for climatic uncertainty and unplanned outages.

Start date: 01/06/2021

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

Artelys is developing tools to prepare maintenance plans for various scenarios, including scarce rain, and extreme weather. These tools would provide Artelys with a competitive edge and enable them to conduct advanced power system analyses, enhancing their ability to adapt to changing conditions.

Goals

Reduce time to solution

Challenges

Shutting down power plants or transmission lines for maintenance is costly due to energy market volatility. Unsuitable scheduling can cost millions. Factors like weather and random outages add stress to the power network, making demand harder to guarantee. Renewable sources exacerbate uncertainty.

Innovation results

Artelys and INRIA-Aviz developed solutions for the European Power System Challenge by creating a representative data set, simulating massive scenarios, and identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The selection of the best scenarios was guided by cost and CO2 emission minimization.

Business impact

Estimated additional sales of up to €4 million over next 5 years, 3 quantitative studies per year which could not be performed without these new HPC-based calculation capabilities, up to 5 studies per year significantly accelerated and improved thanks to these calculation tools, improved calculation capabilities in Artelys software for experienced users.
