Problem Description

Micro Channel Heat Exchangers (MCHX) offer improved performance in aeronautic, aerospace, and oil & gas sectors due to high volumetric heat flux, compactness, and efficient flow distribution. Topology Optimization (TO) is a promising design paradigm for finding an optimal design.

Topology Optimization (TO) is a promising design paradigm, but it's impossible to manufacture using standard techniques. Combining TO with Additive Manufacturing (AM) has potential but requires technical challenges for accurate results and delivering innovative, customized MCHX solutions.

Innovation results

The TOLOMHE platform, a SaaS solution for topology optimization of MCHX, was developed as a cloud service for SMEs specialized in AM for MCHX. It integrates a standard CFD solver, a Machine Learning model, and a parametrized topology, allowing multiscale simulations without high-resolution models.

Business impact

TOLOMHE aims to reduce time-to-design, time-to-market, and time-to-prototype for SMEs specialized in high-performance MCHX design. It could save €100.000 per year and generate €100,000 in revenue within 12 months. Applications include oil-air and sea water-natural gas heat exchanger projects.
