GTS, an innovative start-up, uses HPC to optimize its sea litter recovery strategy, aiming to collect marine detritus, particularly plastics, with accurate spatial and time predictions. This innovative approach addresses the growing global need for efficient, clean, and autonomous technologies.

Start date: 01/06/2021

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

Marine litter, primarily plastic, poses a significant threat to over 2 billion people's livelihoods and sectors like aquaculture, fisheries, tourism, and wildlife. Green Tech Solution (GTS) aims to automate litter collection by integrating Neural Networks and Deep Learning logic.

Goals

New services

Challenges

The current automatic litter collection approach uses an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to monitor litter, with an inaccurate algorithm for speed and direction. The recovery strategy only focuses on one litter object at a time, leading to long recovery times for the catamaran.

Innovation results

The Litter Hunter is a new HPC-based approach that predicts marine litter trajectories using two neural networks and a multi-objective algorithm. It allows for optimized recovery and monitoring of larger marine areas, reducing operational and management costs.

Business impact

GTS offers improved sustainability, a 60% reduction in battery energy consumption, 80% reduction in planning time, 50% reduction in recovery time, and 40% reduction in maintenance costs. Services cost €2-3000 per km, with market expansion outside Italy to serve 2000km of EU coastline in 5-6 years.
