High-Resolution Early Precipitation-to-Flood Signals, a Pilot Service within the DestinE programme

image

The High-Resolution Early Precipitation-to-Flood Signals project core objective is to leverage the operational products of the DestinE Extremes Digital Twin (Extremes DT) to support informed decision-making in the management of hydro-meteorological risks—especially floods—across regional and local scales.

By integrating advanced weather and hydrological models, early warning indicators, and high-resolution simulations, the project aims to provide accurate and timely data to support early action and enhance climate resilience.

General Notes

The High-Resolution Early Precipitation-to-Flood Signals project, within the European Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative, specifically under its Pilot Services for Impact Sectors, focuses on enhancing resilience and mitigating the effects of extreme weather events.

It is coordinated by Agenzia ItaliaMeteo in partnership with DWD (Germany’s National Meteorological Service), Fondazione CIMA (Italy’s centre of excellence for hydrological modelling and civil protection), and CINECA, Italian HPC Centre for High-Performance Computing and Technology Implementation.

The Pilot Service is structured in three operational layers: aggregated precipitation indicators for large-scale pre-alerts, application of the hydrological model to assess river behaviour and flood-prone areas across Italy, and on-demand high-resolution meteorological simulations (up to 500 meters) using the ICON model.

CINECA contributes its expertise and the Leonardo supercomputer, enabling the execution and optimisation of large-scale simulations. This computing power is essential to produce accurate and timely data, which is essential to addressing the challenges of climate change.

This activity is supported by ECMWF for Destination Earth.
Destination Earth is a European Union funded initiative and is implemented under the leadership of DG CNECT by ECMWF, ESA, and EUMETSAT.
