Established and funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP), NBFC is one of five national centres dedicated to frontier research. The Centre has received funding of EUR 320 million for three years, from 2023 to 2025, and carries out work of strategic importance with a view to contributing to achieving the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

General notes

The loss of biodiversity is affecting Italy and the entire Mediterranean region heavily.
This results as a call for action for the scientific community to develop knowledge and let enabling technologies for addressing the challenge and respect the fundamental Constitutional change.
The National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) aims at addressing interdisciplinary and frontier research and innovation activities devoted to the knowledge monitoring, conservation, restoring and valorization of Italian biodiversity. It is organized around 48 academic and industrial partners: in a unique cross-disciplinary approach, biologists, biotechnologists, bioinformatics, medical doctors, physicists, mathematicians, geologists, engineers and economists will study the problems related to biodiversity in marine, terrestrial and urban frameworks and how to restore and valorize biodiversity. The coordination among all the partners, as well as the existing and newly formed collaborations at national and at international level, will generate an impressive amount of new data and new knowledge which has to be made available to the international research community. All these data will be made available and regularly updated by means of four digitalization platforms (Biodiversity Collection, Molecular Biodiversity, Bioresources, Ecosystem Function and Monitoring) developed in direct and strong collaboration with CINECA (and also INFN and different ESFRI infrastructures). These Open Data Platforms constitute NBFC’s legacy beyond the NRRP natural timescale.

Objectives

CINECA is developing the Open Data Platforms for the NBFC to accellerate research on Biodiversity. These Platforms are structured as a single access point to the National and International Biodiversity Data. The Platfroms will have a data lake for Biodiversity records and a toolbox for helping scientists to test model on Biodiversity.
