OptimEsm

OptimESM (Optimal High Resolution Earth System Models for Exploring Future Climate Changes) project aims to develop a new breed of Earth system models. It will contribute to planning the efforts needed to limit the increase in global temperatures to 1.5-2°C, according to the Paris Agreement, with critical information about mitigation pathways. OptimESM will target the following topics during an operational period of five continuous years: the development of high-resolution ESMs; improvements in the process of climate simulation at high resolution; the construction of policy-relevant emission and land-use scenarios; the quantification of uncertainties in climate projections; investigation of abrupt climate change risks; and investigation of regional climate impacts in Europe and polar regions.
The project wants to gain a deeper understanding of the complex ways different parts of Earth’s climate system interact and forecast future climate scenarios. CINECA has a crucial part in OptimESM offering know-how in two main fields. First, CINECA will use AI methods to downscale the detailed climate simulations created in the project. Second, CINECA will set up and run the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) data service, a central place to store and share the huge amount of climate data OptimESM produces. By offering these key services, CINECA helps the OptimESM project to reach its big goals and provide useful insights about our planet’s future.
