RIVIERADE

RIVIERADE – Improving modelling methods to produce climate services for resilient European seas and coasts in a decadal to multi-decadal horizon.
Delivering validated climate services to build coastal and marine resilience across European seas over decadal to multi-decadal timescales is a core objective of the European Green Deal and climate adaptation policy. The RIVIERADE project brings together and capitalizes on the combined expertise of two major ocean and climate modeling communities, CORDEX and the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS), to develop a pre-operational, replicable multi-model framework.
RIVIERADE focuses on three target European basins with distinct physical and biogeochemical dynamics: the Baltic Sea (BAL), the Black Sea (BLK), and the Mediterranean Sea (MED). The primary ambition is to bridge the methodological gap between climate science and operational oceanography, transforming complex scientific data into actionable climate indicators and services for policymakers, coastal zone managers, and blue economy sectors.
General Notes
RIVIERADE is structured around three interconnected methodological pillars:
- Co-design of climate services: active, continuous engagement with stakeholders and end-users via a dedicated Users and Stakeholders Advisory Board (USAB) to identify priority needs at basin, regional, and local levels.
- Ensemble simulations and uncertainty quantification: production of a coordinated multi-model “Grand Ensemble” of high-resolution simulations, including over 25 multi-decadal simulations (historical runs and SSP socio-economic scenarios) as well as downscaled decadal predictions (1–10 year horizon) compliant with DCPP protocols.
- Indicators and coastal demonstrators: development of key ocean health indicators (e.g., deoxygenation, acidification, marine heatwaves), coastal hazard metrics (Extreme Total Water Level – ETWL for erosion and flooding), and sustainability indicators for aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism across 4 targeted local use cases (the Southern Black Sea, the Marmara Sea, the Northern Adriatic and the Swedish coast).
CINECA hosts the central shared data hub for RIVIERADE on the Leonardo supercomputer: reserved under OGS’s responsibility within the PRACE-Italy research infrastructure, 1 PB of high-performance storage is allocated at CINECA for data exchange, persistent archiving, and data post-processing throughout the project lifecycle. The storage architecture spans Leonardo’s high-throughput SCRATCH partition for active runs, persistent WORK and DRES areas for shared working datasets, and the all-flash GARDA filesystem supporting POSIX (NFS) and S3 multiprotocol access. Partners will securely transfer simulation files via dedicated datamover nodes into staging zones before moving them into a shared curated zone for post-processing.
Furthermore, as an EDITO-Model Lab partner, CINECA will be able to ensure seamless integration and FAIR-compliant data sharing in the frame of the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) and the European Digital Twin of the Ocean.
