TALEA – Green Cells Leading the Green Transition is an innovative project designed to transform urban spaces into climate-resilient havens through the integration of nature-based solutions, advanced technology, and active citizen participation.

Cities around the globe, including Bologna and the Emilia Romagna Region, are increasingly facing extreme temperatures and heatwaves. The TALEA project addresses these urgent challenges by developing adaptable and replicable TALEA Green Cells (TGC). These integrated solutions blend urban greenery, cutting-edge monitoring technology, and citizen-driven data collection to mitigate urban heat islands and provide inclusive, accessible climate shelters.

The initial implementation focuses on three selected areas within Bologna, identified through participatory budgeting and vulnerability mapping:

  • Two areas in the historic City Centre – North Area
  • One area in Fossolo (Savena District)

Each area will see public spaces transformed into green corridors, designed in collaboration with local communities and monitored through advanced technological systems accessible to all citizens.

Multi-Dimensional Impact

TALEA emphasizes inclusivity, aiming to support vulnerable groups most affected by urban heat islands. The project integrates:

  • Public Space: Redesigning urban areas into climate shelters.
  • Technology: Employing innovative digital tools for design and monitoring.
  • Social Inclusion: Engaging diverse communities in a just ecological transition.
